Tips to fight anxiety and depression

Depression is a mental disorder that can cause hopelessness, loss of interest in life and suicidal thoughts. It is a very common condition all over the world, but many people still are not aware of it or do not know what causes it. Anxiety is a feeling we experience in response to an event that either causes us to predict future danger or increases our awareness of potential dangers in the present. To prevent anxiety and depression, you need to follow these tips;

1. Do not try to face the problem by yourself.

This may be difficult to do, but you know you need to be around people that can give you support to keep your mind off the problem. Talk to friends and family members, and share your feelings with them; they may struggle with a similar problem in the future, so they know how best to help you.

2. Exercise daily.

This will improve your mood by increasing levels of serotonin and dopamine while decreasing symptoms of anxiety and depression. It is important that you exercise every day in order for it to raise your mood because if you only exercise every now and then, suddenly stopping after being used to it will result in a depression episode.

3. Stay away from bad habits.

Drugs, alcohol or smoking can cause depression, and anxiety and make you feel easily frustrated. For example, if you drink alcohol to relieve your stress, you will soon be reliant on it and when you’re not drinking it anymore, you will feel depressed and anxious. Most drugs are addictive and can be a huge reason for depression down the road.

4. Do not get angry easily.

If you have problems with anger that lead to outbursts at home or with friends, then seek help immediately before it gets worse.

5. Get more sleep every night.

Studies have shown that people with insomnia are more likely to suffer depression and anxiety in the future; sleep helps your body recover and rest, which is a very effective method to reduce stress and anxiety. If you don’t fall asleep easily at night, try reading or listening to music before bedtime; it doesn’t matter what you like, as long as it helps you relax before going to sleep. Try not to stop your sleeping pattern if you can help it because unhealthy habits will often result in depression down the road. Your body needs constant rest because it helps regain strength and build immunity again after experiencing depression or anxiety down the road.

6. Write down your thoughts.

This will help you figure out what you are feeling and why and will keep your mind occupied for a period of time.

7. Be positive at all times, even when no one is watching.

When you think negative thoughts, it shows on your face, and others can recognize that something is wrong with you if they are around you long enough. Always try to be positive because it will reflect in the way you act as well; people love being around happy people more than they do with people who look angry or sad around them. If someone makes fun of you because of this, tell them to go away; they obviously have issues too and need to be left alone.
